At Fox & Muse Editing, I offer a range of services to help your manuscript reach its full potential.

Here’s a breakdown of what we offer.

  • For a line edit, I will analyze the pacing, voice, word choice, tense, and any other corrections relating to the general narrative flow. Line edits are performed after an author has had a developmental edit performed and made the necessary corrections. To do so, I will go through your novel, leaving comments within the document explaining the suggested changes. The primary purpose of a line edit is to strengthen your authorial voice and to allow your characters to shine. While a line edit is not a copy edit, any changes to syntax will be done in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition.

Line editing includes, but is not limited to:

    • Conducting heavier fact checking.

    • Making suggestions about moving or removing text and why.

    • Offering a new scheme for moving a chapter or two around to better accommodate a timeline.

    • Pointing out repetition and inconsistencies in the story line, but not rewriting.

    • Revising awkward sentences, breaking up long sentences, streamlining sentences with clauses and parentheticals.

    • Substituting stronger words for commonly overused words.

Cost of line editing is $0.03/word consistent with the Editorial Freelancers Association.

  • A copy edit is primary focused on the grammar and syntax , digging into the minutiae of your novel. In other words, the focus is on the mechanics, not the content, but done so as to not diminish your authorial voice. Copy edits are performed after line edits. Depending on the condition of your novel, copy editing can sometimes be combined with a line edit. All changes will be done in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style, 18th edition.

    A copy edit includes:

    • Correcting any typos, which would include misspelled words.

    • Filling in missing words.

    • Streamlining punctuation and properly using commas, periods, and em dashes.

    • Avoiding overuse of ellipses to denote a break in thought and exclamation marks.

    • Making sure the names of characters and places are spelled consistently throughout.

Cost of copy editing is $0.02/word consistent with the Editorial Freelancers Association; however, if you purchase the line editing service, this service will be discounted.

  • Proofreading is the final step before your manuscript goes to print. I’ll review your writing for any last-minute errors, ensuring your book is polished and professional. I’ll also check for formatting issues and make sure your manuscript meets industry standards.

Proofreading is perfect for authors who want a final check before publishing their book.

Cost of proofreading is $0.01/word consistent with the Editorial Freelancers Association.

  • Beta reading is a bit different from our other services. Instead of editing your manuscript, I’ll read it as a reader would. I’ll provide feedback on things like plot, character development, pacing, and more. Beta reading is ideal for authors who want feedback on their manuscript before hiring a developmental editor. This is especially useful for those writing crime drama or legal fiction who want to ensure believability regarding the legal system.

I offer two different packages. A Full Beta Read includes a report along with comments in the document. A Light Beta Read is just the report.

Cost of beta reading is $0.008/word consistent with the Editorial Freelancers Association. For the Full Beta Read package, there’s an additional $25 charge. Turnaround for a beta read is normally 2-3 weeks, though this can be expedited for an extra fee.
